6. Regulation of Lipoprotein Lipase Activity : an In-vitro Study of a Complex and Dynamic System
Sammanfattning : The progress of human society outpaces our biological evolution, and this brings unexpected health problems. The industrial revolution brought up dramatic changes in nutrition and lifestyle – we are increasingly shifting towards a nutrient-rich Western-patterned diet and to a sedentary lifestyle. LÄS MER
7. Functional regulation of the dopaminergic system in vivo : Experimental and clinical studies with positron emission tomography
Sammanfattning : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to quantitate the kinetics of a radiotracer in such physiological processes as receptor binding and enzyme activity. Radiolabelled L-DOPA has previously been used as a tracer for the dopaminergic system. LÄS MER
8. Intracellular components involved in parathyroid sensing of extracellular calcium
Sammanfattning : Parathyroid glands are the primary regulator of extracellular calcium ([Ca2+]e). Ca2+ plays a key role in many fundamental biological processes and is also an essential structural component of the skeleton. The parathyroid chief cells detect small changes in [Ca2+]e and respond by altering the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). LÄS MER
9. Glucuronyl C5-epimerases in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on two enzymes, both glucuronyl CS-epimerases, that catalyse the conversion of D-glucuronic acid (GlcA) into L-iduronic acid (IdoA) residues in the repeating disaccharide units of heparin/heparan sulphate (HS) and dermatan sulphate (DS) polymers. These glycosaminoglycans are produced as proteoglycans, in which linear polysaccharide chains are attached covalently to a protein core. LÄS MER
10. Protein recognition domains in heparan sulfate
Sammanfattning : Heparan sulfate (HS) is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) implicated in various physiological and pathological processes such as cell proliferation, viral infection and inhibition of blood coagulation. These effects are due to interactions of HS with proteins. LÄS MER
