11. Levodopa pharmacokinetics -from stomach to brain : A study on patients with Parkinson’s disease
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and it is caused by a loss of dopamine (DA) producing neurons in the basal ganglia in the brain. The PD patient suffers from motor symptoms such as tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity and treatment with levodopa (LD), the precursor of DA, has positive effects on these symptoms. LÄS MER
12. Imaging Studies of Olfaction in Health and Parkinsonism
Sammanfattning : Olfactory loss is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD), often preceding the cardinal motor symptoms of the disease. The aim of this thesis was to: (a) evaluate whether olfactory examination can increase diagnostic accuracy, and (b) study the structural and functional neural basis of olfactory dysfunction in PD with different applications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed.
