1. Progesterone metabolites : learning, tolerance, antagonism & metabolism
Sammanfattning : Progesterone metabolites as allopregnanolone, isoallopregnanolone and tetrahydrodeoxy-corticosterone (THDOC) are increased in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, throughout pregnancy and during stress. Allopregnanolone and THDOC are neurosteroids with 3α-hydroxy, 5α-configurations and positive modulating effect on the GABAA receptor. LÄS MER
2. Individual variation in behaviour: personality and performance of brown trout in the wild
Sammanfattning : Individuals from the same population often show very different behaviour. These differences, when consistent across time, are referred to as animal personality or behavioural syndromes. Explaining the occurrence of animal personality from an evolutionary perspective has however proven a difficult issue to tackle. LÄS MER
3. Hippocampal galanin and acetylcholine in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to study how the neuropeptide galanin affects the neurochemistry and functional activity of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory. This cholinergic system is strongly impaired in Alzheimer's disease and in age-related dementias. LÄS MER
4. Growth hormone in the brain : Focus on cognitive function
Sammanfattning : Cognitive impairments are an increasing health problem worldwide. In the developed countries, the average life expectancy has dramatically increased over the last decades, and with an elderly population more cases of cognitive impairments appear. LÄS MER
5. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning.
