2. Non-genetic processes in development and heredity
Sammanfattning : There is a swiftly increasing amount of empirical evidence that non-genetic factors, such as DNA methylation and small RNAs, play an important role not only in development but also in heredity and, therefore, evolutionary dynamics. One of the most interesting aspects of non-genetic processes is their responsiveness to environmental conditions, which has been shown to affect not only the phenotype and fitness of the individuals directly exposed to the stimulus, but also their offspring even when the stimulus is no longer present, indicating that the transmission of non-genetic factors across generations might work analogously to immunization against recurring conditions. 3. Constraint-based modeling of metabolism - interpreting predictions of growth and ATP synthesis in human and yeast
Sammanfattning : Growth is the primary objective of the cell. Diseases arise when cells diverge from a healthy growth-pattern. An increased understanding of cellular growth may thus be translated into improved human health. The cell requires materials and free energy (in the form of ATP) in order to grow, metabolism supplies the cell with this. LÄS MER
4. Modelling Approaches to Molecular Systems Biology
Sammanfattning : Implementation and analysis of mathematical models can serve as a powerful tool in understanding how intracellular processes in bacteria affect the bacterial phenotype. In this thesis I have implemented and analysed models of a number of different parts of the bacterium E. coli in order to understand these types of connections. LÄS MER
5. Systems Biology in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Statistical data analysis and mathematical methods
Sammanfattning : Over the last decade, Systems Biology has emerged as a new paradigm in the study of cellular systems which are characterized from a global perspective; in contrast to the traditional cellular biology, which was focused on specific components of the cell. To this end, a key milestone for the achievement of a global view of biology is the generation and interpretation of different datasets derived from omics technologies; such as Transcriptome and Proteome.
