6. The Chevreton tensor and its trace
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we investigate the Chevreton tensor in Einstein-Maxwell theory. It was introduced in 1964 as the counterpart, for electromagnetic fields, of the well-known Bel-Robinson tensor of the gravitational field. We prove that, in the absence of electromagnetic sources, this tensor is completely symmetric. LÄS MER
7. Shapes of Spacetimes : Collected tales of black holes
Sammanfattning : In theory, the existence of black holes is predicted by general relativity. In reality, there is a general consensus that they exist in space; in particular at the center of many galaxies. The theory of black holes has been around for decades, but there are still interesting questions calling for attention. LÄS MER
8. Predominant failure mechanisms at the Kiirunavaara mine footwall
Sammanfattning : The Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) Kiirunavaara mine is a large scale sub-level caving (SLC) mine in northern Sweden. The use of SLC as a mining method inherently causes significant rock mass movements above the extraction level. LÄS MER
9. The induced magnetospheres and magnetotails of Mars and Venus
Sammanfattning : In this work we focus on several aspects of the ionospheres, induced magnetospheres, and magnetotails of the unmagnetized planets Mars and Venus. The solar wind interaction with unmagnetized planets differs from the magnetized planets: they are more directly exposed to the solar wind, and consequently can respond faster and more dynamically to solar wind variations, necessitating careful analysis of the driving conditions upstream simultaneously with plasma measurements in the system. 10. Cold-climate landforms on Mars and Earth-analogues in Svalbard
Sammanfattning : Periglacial landforms on Earth reflect cold-climate conditions and are intimately related to processes due to the presence of ground ice and perennially frozen ground, permafrost. The overall objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential of Svalbard as an analogue to Mars cold-climate landforms, and explore past and present processes and surface conditions on Mars by inference from morphological counterparts in Svalbard.
