1. Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) and Metabolic Disruption
Sammanfattning : Metbolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, liver lipid disorders and metabolic syndrome are increasing rapidly and have largely been attributed to genetic background and changes in diet, exercise and aging. However, there is now considerable evidence showing that other environmental factors, including environmental chemicals, may contribute to the rapid increase in the incidence of these metabolic diseases. 2. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Asymmetric Enzymatic Reactions : Applications to Limonene Epoxide Hydrolase and Arylmalonate Decarboxylase
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, density functional theory has been employed to study the reactionmechanisms of two enzymes with possible applications in asymmetric biocatalysis. To reproduce and rationalize the stereoselectivity of the enzymes, quite large cluster models that account for the chiral environment of the active site have been used. 3. Characterisation of some iron proteins in Drosophilia melanogaster and Pacifastacus leniusculus
Sammanfattning : The cDNA cloning of the 76-kDa protein, an immune protein from crayfishhaemocytes, shows that it is similar to a family of haem-containing peroxidases. In addition to its cell adhesion activity it has also peroxidase activity, and theprotein was named peroxinectin. The cell adhesion is probably mediated by aKGD-motif present in peroxinectin. LÄS MER
4. Levodopa pharmacokinetics -from stomach to brain : A study on patients with Parkinson’s disease
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and it is caused by a loss of dopamine (DA) producing neurons in the basal ganglia in the brain. The PD patient suffers from motor symptoms such as tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity and treatment with levodopa (LD), the precursor of DA, has positive effects on these symptoms. LÄS MER
5. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Asymmetric Enzymatic Reactions
Sammanfattning : Computational methods are very useful tools in the study of enzymatic reactions, as they can provide a detailed understanding of reaction mechanisms and the sources of various selectivities. In this thesis, density functional theory has been employed to examine four different enzymes of potential importance for biocatalytic applications. LÄS MER
