  1. 1. The hepatitis B virus – Insights into genetic variability, evolution and Bayesian phylogeographic inference

    Författare :Mikael Ingman; Malmö Klinisk virologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hepatit B; evolutionsbiologi; fylogeni; Hepatitis B; evolutionary dynamics; Phylogeography;

    Sammanfattning : In terms of genome size, the hepatitis B virus is the smallest virus known to infect humans and its compactness with multiple overlapping reading frames puts restraints on the emergence of mutations. In the papers included in this thesis we aimed to investigate genetic variation within the precore and core promoter region and to describe the origin, spread and diversification of HBV genotype A. 2. 2. Tissue tropism among group A streptococci - importance of bacteria associated proteolytic activity

    Författare :Mikael Dag Svensson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cysteine protease; plasminogen; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; tissue tropism; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Group A streptococcus (GAS) is one of the most common of bacterial pathogens infecting humans, frequently causing throat and skin infection. Some GAS strains have surface-expressed virulence factors called M proteins that bind human plasminogen with high affinity. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Human Endogenous Retroviruses: Studies on Transcriptional Activity and Genetic Variability

    Författare :Patrik Medstrand; Malmö Klinisk virologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; virology; bacteriology; HERVs; Human endogenous retrovirus sequences; reverse transcriptase; Microbiology; differential RNA expression.; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are believed to be remains of germ-line infections that have become fixed in the population. They are involved in pathophysiological conditions, in mechanisms leading to infection protection, and directly in the physiology of the organism by participating in the regulation of cellular gene expression. 4. 4. The HIV-1 epidemic in Ethiopia – transmission patterns, antiretroviral drug resistance and treatment outcomes

    Författare :Dawit Assefa; Malmö Klinisk virologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV-1; HIV drug resistance HIVDR ; Phylodynamics; Phylogenetic; Molecular epidemology; transmitted HIVDR; acquired HIVDR; pre-treatment HIVDR; Integrase strand transfer inhibitors INSTI ; Ethiopia; antiretroviral therapy;

    Sammanfattning : A comprehensive understanding of local HIV epidemiology is essential for monitoring transmission, designing, implementing, and evaluating HIV intervention strategies. In paper I, we used a total of 1276 HIV-1 subtype C pol sequences and employed state-of-art phylogenetic and phylodynamic tools to describe the molecular epidemiology of HIV in Ethiopia. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Resistant pneumococci and use of antibiotics

    Författare :Eva Melander; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; streptococcus pneumoniae; Antibiotics; drug resistance; bacteriology; Microbiology; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Pneumococcal resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem. The rapid increase in frequency seems to be caused by intercontinental spread of a few resistant clones. Resistance to antibiotics in pneumococci has reduced the therapeutic arsenal for common respiratory tract infections as well as for invasive infections. LÄS MER
