1. Clinical, biochemical and morphological aspects of cervical ripening in the first trimester
Sammanfattning : Background: The uterine cervix has the ability to be transformed from being a rigid organ in non-pregnant women to become a loose structure that dilates and allows passage of the foetus at parturition. This process, cervical ripening, has been described similar to an inflammatory reaction of the extracellular matrix involving activation of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases and breakdown of the collagen framework. 2. Dentine caries : acid tolerant microorganisms and aspects on collagen degradation
3. Studies on plaque distribution and gingival crevicular fluid after non-surgical treatment in smokers and non-smokers with periodontal diseases
Sammanfattning : Dental plaque plays a key role in the complex process by which periodontal diseases are initiated. The basic treatment of these diseases is non-surgical, involving supragingival plaque control as well as supra- and subgingival scaling and root planing. LÄS MER
4. Tobacco smoking, vascular reaction and neutrophil activity in periodontal health and disease
Sammanfattning : Tobacco smoking has considerable negative effects on periodontal health. The mechanisms behind these effects may be related to the inflammatory response. In this thesis, the main aim was to study the influence of tobacco smoking on the inflammatory response in periodontal health and disease. LÄS MER
5. Salivary biomarkers : diagnostic potential in oral and systemic diseases in epidemiological surveys
Sammanfattning : Human saliva is a fluid with many biological functions, and essential for the maintenance of oral health. Several studies report local and systemic biomarkers appearing in saliva, including electrolytes, blood products, enzymes and tissue destruction molecules, inflammatory markers as well as proteins putatively associated with different diseases.
