21. Tertiary Alcohol- or β-Hydroxy γ-Lactam-Based HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors : Microwave Applications in Batch and Continuous Flow Organic Synthesis
Sammanfattning : Since the outbreak of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, the disease has cost the lives of over 30 million people, and a further 33 million are currently living with the HIV infection. With the appropriate treatment, HIV/AIDS can today be regarded as a chronic but manageable disease. LÄS MER
22. Heterogeneities in polymer gels: Effects on swelling and mechanical properties
Sammanfattning : Polymeric hydrogels is a class of scientifically interesting materials that are being extensively studied. They are found in numerous applications within; drug delivery, hygiene products, food industry, analytical chemistry, etc. In addition, polymeric hydrogels have promising future applications as; cell scaffolds, implants, sensors, etc. LÄS MER
23. High-throughput screening using multicellular tumor spheroids to reveal and exploit tumor-specific vulnerabilities
Sammanfattning : High-throughput drug screening (HTS) in live cells is often a vital part of the preclinical anticancer drug discovery process. So far, two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell cultures have been the most prevalent model in HTS endeavors. However, 2D cell cultures often fail to recapitulate the complex microenvironments of in vivo tumors. LÄS MER
24. Affibody-Based Molecular Imaging and Targeted Therapy of HER3-Expressing Cancer
Sammanfattning : The human epidermal growth factor receptor type 3 (HER3) is overexpressed in different types of cancer and is a known contributor to disease progression and resistance to cancer therapy. This thesis is based on five original articles, which aimed to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of affibody-based agents for management of HER3-expressing cancers. LÄS MER
25. Design and synthesis of aspartyl protease inhibitors : Targeting HIV-1 and malaria plasmepsin I and II
Sammanfattning : Aspartyl proteases can generally be inhibited by peptide mimics containing an uncleavable peptide bond isostere at the proposed cleavage site. One such peptide bond isostere is the hydroxyethylamine moiety, which in this thesis has successfully been incorporated in potential inhibitors of the HIV-1-protease as well as the malarial proteases plasmepsin I and II.
