  1. 21. Prostaglandins and Isoprostanes in Relation to Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis : Role of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

    Författare :Johanna Helmersson; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Tommy Cederholm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; prostaglandin F2α; F2-isoprostane; interleukin-6; C-reactive protein; serum amyloid A; tocopherols; cardiovascular risk factors; variation; inflammation; oxidative stress; human; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammation and oxidative stress may be involved in atherogenesis. This thesis describes clinical studies of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), an inflammatory mediator, and the isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α, a reliable indicator of oxidative stress, and cytokine-related inflammatory mediators and indicators in healthy subjects and in a population-based cohort of Swedish men. 2. 22. Self-rated quality of life among unemployed people and people in work in northern Sweden

    Författare :Barbro Hultman; Sven Hemlin; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Unemployment; Quality of Life; Health; Well-being; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Sammanfattning : Self-assessed quality of life (QoL) is analysed using a QoL questionnaire (Hörnquist’s QLcs)covering the life spheres: somatic health, mental well-being, cognitive ability, social and family life,activity, financial situation, meaning in life and a global score for ‘entire life’. In all, 487unemployed and 2917 employed subjects aged 25-64; and 651 unemployed subjects and 2802 inwork (including employment, studying and military service) in the 18-24 age group, wereinvestigated in a population-based cross-sectional study on life and health in northern Sweden in1997. Författare :Anders Knutsson; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CHD; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Sammanfattning : Previous research on the medical consequences of shift work has mainly been concerned with sleep disorders and gastrointestinal disturbances. Cardiovascular disease has not been clearly implicated. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Improving the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) : a study using Chlamydia trachomatis as a model infection

    Författare :Daniel Novak; Roger Karlsson; Berit Andersen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; STI; Prevention; Chlamydia; Postal screening; cost effective; condom; Internet; self-selective screening; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Family Medicine; allmänmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Despite the current preventive strategies sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are rising. This thesis presents a model with the aim of improving the prevention of STIs. Chlamydia being the most common STI in Sweden serves as a model infection. The presented model is based on five performed studies. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Modeling Amyloid-β Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease Using the Arctic Mutation

    Författare :Ola Philipson; Lars Nilsson; Lars Lannfelt; Fred van Leuven; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; Amyloid; Amyloid-β; intraneuronal; transgenic mice; immunohistochemistry; ELISA; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : The Arctic mutation in the Amyloid-β (Aβ) domain of the Amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) causes Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and confers unique biochemical characteristics to Aβ peptides. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate a transgenic model with the Arctic mutation, and to use it to gain new insights into the mechanisms of early (pre-plaque) and late-stage Aβ pathogenesis in AD.
