Sammanfattning : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating disease that affects people in their late mid-life, with fatal outcome usually within a few years. The progressive degeneration of neurons responsible for muscle movement (motor neurons) throughout the central nervous system (CNS) leads to muscle wasting and paralysis, and eventually affects respiratory function. 2. 2. Characterization of IgY for Oral Immunotherapy and Prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Författare :Elin Nilsson; Anders Larsson; Jane Burns; Uppsala universitet; []

Sammanfattning : Chicken antibodies, commonly referred to as IgY, have several properties that make them suitable for oral treatment of infections and there is essentially no risk for development of resistance. The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate Anti-Pseudomonas IgY as prophylaxis against infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and to characterize the antibody treatment. Sammanfattning : Background: The secretory epithelial cells of the prostate gland use sophisticated vehicles named prostasomes to relay important information to sperm cells in semen. This prostasome-forming and secretory ability of the epithelial cells is also preserved in poorly differentiated prostate cancer cells. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Sources of preanalytical error in primary health care : implications for patient safety

Författare :Johan Söderberg; Christine Brulin; Ewa Idvall; Umeå universitet; []

Sammanfattning : Background Venous blood tests constitute an important part in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. However, test results are often viewed as objective values rather than the end result of a complex process. This has clinical importance since most errors arise before the sample reaches the laboratory. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Misfolded superoxide dismutase-1 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Sammanfattning : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease in which the motor neurons die in a progressive manner, leading to paralysis and muscle wasting. ALS is always fatal, usually through respiratory failure when the disease reaches muscles needed for breathing. Most cases are sporadic, but approximately 5–10% are familial. LÄS MER
