21. On the regulation and effects of chronic inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease
Sammanfattning : Inflammatory bowel disease is thought to result from the inappropriate and ongoing activation of the mucosal immune system driven by the presence of normal luminal flora. In this process monocytes/macrophages contribute to and maintain chronic inflammation by being both regulatory and effector cells. LÄS MER
22. INITIATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ACUTE PANCREATITIS AND MODULATION OF INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Sammanfattning : Heparan sulfate (HS), a substance common in the extracellular matrix on epithelial cells is present in the pancreas, lining the duct lumen. During pathological conditions, we propose that it can be shed from the ECM and bind to receptors on the cell surface, thus triggering an inflammatory response, which if excessive can cause acute pancreatitis (AP). 23. Inflammatory response and intervention in experimental acute pancreatitis
Sammanfattning : Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease where underlying mechanisms for the local initiating events in the pancreas, the systemic dissemination of the inflammatory response and remote organ dysfunction still are unclear. The overall aim of the thesis was to study mechanisms of the inflammatory response in AP with special emphasis on local, systemic, and distant organ injury directed at different signalling pathways, and potential therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of inflammation and cell injury following AP. 24. Inflammatory Mediators and Enterovirus Infections in Human Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is due to a selective loss of the insulin producing β-cells. However, the process responsible for this loss is still unknown. There is accumulating evidence that enteroviruses (EVs) are involved in T1D. In addition to direct virus-induced cytolysis, EVs could facilitate β-cell destruction by inducing inflammatory cytokines. 25. Mediators of cervical ripening in preterm birth : experimental and clinical investigations
Sammanfattning : Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is by far the leading worldwide cause of infant mortality and morbidity. Despite decades of research, the frequency of PTB has not decreased and the basic mechanisms initiating the onset of labour are still poorly understood. Vaginal preterm birth cannot take place without cervical softening and remodelling. LÄS MER
