1. Female reproductive strategies and sexual conflicts in a polygynous mating system
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have investigated conflicts of interest in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) with a focus on female reproductive strategies. The extent to which males provided parental care was a key issue in understanding the mating system of the starling. LÄS MER
2. Breeding System Evolution and Pollination Success in the Wind-Pollinated Herb Plantago maritima
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examined variation in sex expression and mating patterns in the sexually polymorphic, wind-pollinated herb Plantago maritima. With a combination of field studies, greenhouse experiments, and genetic analyses, I (a) examined factors influencing sex ratio variation in gynodioecious plants (in which hermaphrodites and females coexist), (b) discovered variation in breeding system, (c) investigated density-dependence of seed production, and (d) documented genetic variation within and among populations close to the northern range margin in Europe. 3. Genomic studies of mating system variation in flowering plants
Sammanfattning : The striking diversity of reproductive strategies that flowering plants exhibit remains one of the most intriguing conundrums in evolutionary biology. Pollination-related traits and mating system strategies have a major impact on the processes shaping plant evolution through their effects on genetic diversity and selection. LÄS MER
4. Mating system evolution and self-incompatibility in the wild plant species Brassica cretica
Sammanfattning : Compared to animals like ourselves, plants have a very flexible sexual life. Most plants are, for example, hermaphrodites with the potential capacity for reproduction by self-fertilization (or selfing). LÄS MER
5. The evolutionary ecology of plant reproductive diversity and floral signals : Mating system and floral scent in Arabis alpina
Sammanfattning : Flowering plants display an extraordinary floral- and reproductive diversity. Variation in the size, shape, colour and scent of flowers, and in systems and strategies of mating, is ubiquitous in comparisons of different species, but also exists among different conspecific populations.
