  1. 6. Reversal of thyroid dedifferentiation and an invasive phenotype by small molecule kinase inhibitors: an experimental study on normal and malignant cells

    Författare :Camilla Ingeson-Carlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; thyroid; cancer; NIS; MAPK; PI3K; BRAFV600E; migration; 3D culture;

    Sammanfattning : Refractoriness to I-131 in dedifferentiated thyroid cancer is a great concern that restricts radioiodine therapy. There is also a lack of knowledge in understanding the mechanisms leading to repressed sodium iodide symporter (NIS) expression and impaired iodide uptake in tumor cells. LÄS MER

  2. 7. MEKK-1 and NF-κB Signaling in Pancreatic Islet Cell Death

    Författare :Dariush Mokhtari; Nils Welsh; Michael Welsh; Anders Tengholm; Shanta Persaud; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; MEKK-1; JNK; human islets; β-cells; siRNA; apoptosis; cell death; MAPK; nitric oxide; cytokines; streptozotocin; c-Rel; NF-κB; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease resulting in the selective destruction of the insulin producing β-cells in the pancreas. Pro-inflammatory cytokines and the free radical nitric oxide (NO) have been implicated in mediating the destruction of β-cells, possibly through activation of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) JNK, ERK and p38. 3. 8. DNA checkpoint override and redox signaling in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

    Författare :Johanna J Sjölander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Caffeine; Cell cycle; Checkpoint; Cdc25; Wee1; TORC1; FHIT; Proliferation; Aph1; Redox; Hypoxia; H2O2; Cysteine; Thiol; Allosteric; MAPK; Sty1; MAPKK; Wis1;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis covers intracellular stress signaling through genotoxic stress, overriding of checkpoint control, as well as cellular redox status in hypoxic and oxidative stress Papers I and II: Caffeine has been shown to override cell cycle checkpoints in humans as well as in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Understanding of the mechanism may aid in the development of compounds with similar overriding mechanisms for sensitization in cancer therapy. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Altered cell signaling linked to neurodegeneration : Studies on scrapie-infected neuroblastoma cells and activated microglia

    Författare :Christina Svensson; Tiit Land; Gianluigi Forloni; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prion disease; Inflammation; MAPK; Microglia activation; Neuroblastoma; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Prion diseases are neurodegenerative disorders that can affect humans and animals. The underlying event is a conformational change of the normal cellular prion protein (PrPC) into an aberrant isoform termed PrP-scrapie (PrPSc). PrPSc is thought to lead to neurodegeneration and activation of glial cells. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Cytokine induced airway hyperreactivity characterized in an in-vitro model of asthma

    Författare :Yaping Zhang; Klinisk och experimentell allergiforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; MAPK; TNF-alpha; 5-HT; Respiratory system; Andningsorganen; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; interleukin-1beta; hyperresponsiveness; endothelin-1; airway; bradykinin; toxikologi; farmaci;

    Sammanfattning : Asthma is a chronic disorder of the lower airways, characterized by inflammation and hyperreactivity. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) are known to play important roles in the pathogenesis, but our knowledge how these cytokines contribute to the development of airway hyperreactivity is limited.
