  1. 1. Essays on Parental Leave : The Influence of Social Gender Norms, Gender-Role Stereotypes, and Parental Child Gender Bias

    Författare :Asuman Erenel; Magnus Carlsson; Jens Agerström; Erica Lindahl; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; parental leave; parental leave usage; social gender norms; survey experiment; gender equality; implicit association test; gender-role stereotypes; parental child gender bias; parental behavior; family economics; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of three essays on parental leave uptake and other parental behaviors, investigating the effects of social gender norms, gender-role stereotypes, and parental child gender bias.Essay 1 (co-authored with Jens Agerström and Magnus Carlsson): We investigate how social gender norms influence parental leave uptake intentions by conducting two separate survey experiments on prospective fathers (N = 877) and mothers (N = 882) in the UK. 2. 2. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Författare :Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 3. 3. Paternal care and brood reduction in a pipefish

    Författare :Gry Sagebakken; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Parental care; brood reduction; embryo survival; parental condition; filial cannibalism; post-mating sexual selection; HSI; sexual conflicts; Syngnathus typhle; male brooding;

    Sammanfattning : From an evolutionary and adaptive perspective, the occurrence and extent of parental care in animals (investment in offspring beyond the genetic contribution) is expected to depend on an optimal (fitness-maximizing) balance of its costs and benefits. Males of the sex-role reversed broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle, which care for eggs and embryos and may perform brood reduction, are particularly interesting in this respect. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Studies on the Swedish Parental Insurance

    Sammanfattning : This thesis contains an introductory chapter and three essays, all considering different aspects of the Swedish parental insurance. 5. 5. Paternal care, filial cannibalism and sexual conflict in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus

    Författare :Maria Lissåker; Charlotta Kvarnemo; Ulrika Candolin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; female choice; filial cannibalism; Gobiidae; parental care; Pomatoschistus minutus; sand goby; sexual conflict; sexual selection; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Natural and sexual selection and sexual conflict are forces shaping the evolution of reproductive behaviour, while constrained by factors like environment, physiology and life-history trade-offs. Parental care is costly both in terms of time and energy. LÄS MER
