  1. 1. Endothelium-derived Vasoactive Factors and Leukocyte-derived Inflammatory Mediators. Studies in subjects with or at risk for vascular disease

    Författare :Anwaar M Ibrahim; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostacyclin.; Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy; Nitric oxide; Endothelin; Diabetes mellitus; Cytokines; Cholesterol; Atherosclerosis; Cerebral ischemia; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Sammanfattning : This study was undertaken to evaluate relationships between endothelial function (assessed as mediators of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors such as nitric oxide [NO], prostacyclin [PGI2] and endothelin [ET-1] ), and risk factors for atherosclerosis, as well as to study possible relationships between endothelial function and leukocyte activation (indicated by measurements of leukocyte-derived inflammatory mediators) in subjects with or at risk for atherosclerosis. In subjects with asymptomatic atherosclerosis we found inverse relationships between cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in platelets (mediator of NO activity) and both serum total cholesterol and plasma ET-1 suggesting that NO-mediated vasodilation may be impaired in hypercholesterolemia and that maintenance of vascular tone is achieved by a balance between NO and ET-1. 2. 2. The development of novel foods from Swedish pulses : Raw material composition and processing effects

    Författare :Ferawati Ferawati; Cornelia M. Witthöft; Susanna Kariluoto; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; legumes; pulse flour; functional properties; dietary fibre; folate; volatile compounds; cheese analogue; protein isolate; high-moisture extrusion; meat analogue.; Livsmedelsvetenskap; Food Science;

    Sammanfattning : A gradual shift towards a healthier and more sustainable diet with a higher quantity of plant-based products is suggested to be one of the most efficient ways to alleviate environmental pressure from the current food system. Pulses could play a crucial role in this shift due to the multi-faceted benefits they have on the environment and human health. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interactions between Streptococcus pyogenes and the human immune system, with special reference to C4b-binding protein

    Författare :Anette Thern; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; Phagocytosis; M-proteins; M-like proteins; Bovine C4b-binding protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; Human C4b-binding protein; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The ability of many pathogenic microorganisms to cause infection is dependent on their ability to evade attack by the complement system of the host. One mechanism by which microorganisms may avoid complement attack is to bind complement inhibitory molecules present in the host. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Immunoglobulin-binding bacterial surface proteins; biomedical tools and virulence factors

    Författare :Britt-Marie Kihlberg; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phagocytosis; M-like protein; M protein; Protein L; Protein G; Ig-binding; Streptococcus pyogenes; Fc Receptors; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; bacteriology; Microbiology; Cysteine proteinase; Streptolysin;

    Sammanfattning : Many bacteria express immunoglobulin(Ig)-binding proteins that interact with Ig in a non-immune manner. Several of these Ig-binding bacterial proteins have been well characterized and are widely used as reagents for analysis and purification of Ig's. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Photoemission and Characterization of Neutrophils and Nanoparticles : Energy Mapping and Elemental Composition with sub-µm Resolution

    Författare :Andreas Skallberg; Kajsa Uvdal; Christelle Prinz; Linköpings universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Imaging and visualization of cells and tissues are important when studying various biological phenomena. The ability to provide spatial information with molecular and chemical specificity may increase our insight and understanding of biological problems within life sciences. LÄS MER
