16. Mechanisms of Ischemic Brain Injury- studies in murine hippocampal slice cultures
Sammanfattning : Cerebral ischemia is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the western world. Even though much effort has been put into research and development of effective drugs against ischemic damage there is to date no effective pharmacological brain protective treatment. LÄS MER
17. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). LÄS MER
18. Battling Bacterial Biofilm - antibiotic regimens targeting Grampositive pathogens in biofilm
Sammanfattning : AbstractBacteria in most environments encase themselves in a hydrated matrix of polysaccharide and protein, forming organized communities called biofilms. In the biofilm bacteria are protected against hostile environments. Biofilms are important clinically because of their persistence despite host defence and their recalcitrance to antimicrobials. 19. Mitochondrial permeability transition following calcium overload. - Its role in neuronal cell death and potential as a pharmacological target
Sammanfattning : There is currently no clinically available drug with neuroprotective properties to limit the evolving cell death following e.g. stroke or traumatic brain injury. The mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) is a potential pathological mechanism causing cell death in the CNS. LÄS MER
20. HIV-2 infection in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, with special reference to clinical, immunological and epidemiological aspects
Sammanfattning : We have followed a cohort of police officers in Guinea-Bissau between 1990 and 1997 for the study of clinical, immunological and epidemiological aspects of HIV-2 infection. Initially the prevalence of HIV-2 was high (11.6 %) and HIV-1 infection was rare (0. LÄS MER
