    Sammanfattning : The overall purpose of this thesis was to explore the impact of exercise and functional performance on development and treatment of knee osteoarthritis in the middle aged. In this thesis, I have studied a population based cohort of middle-aged subjects (35-54 years, 42 % women) with chronic knee pain at baseline, to evaluate the longitudinal effect of muscle weakness on knee osteoarthritis development, the relationship between muscle function and joint load and the effects of exercise on joint load. 2. 2. Stem cell based therapy of malignant brain tumors

    Författare :Daniel Bexell; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural stem cell; pericyte; mesenchymal stem cell; neuroblast; subventricular zone; cancer stem cell; rat; glioma; cancer;

    Sammanfattning : Malignant brain tumor is a highly invasive and vascularized cancer. Current forms of therapy are not curative and can, at best, prolong survival for patients with this disease. The mean survival is only around 15 months. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : oday about half of the world's population owns the microwave producing mobile phones. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the mammalian brain from potentially harmful substances circulating in the blood. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Peripheral polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance. Correlations between morphology, neurophysiology, and clinical findings

    Författare :Soley Thrainsdottir; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nerve conduction studies; skin biopsy; intraepidermal nerve fibers; Diabetic neuropathy; sural nerve pathology; body mass index; quantitative sensory testing; vibrotactile sense;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy (PN) is a common and serious complication of diabetes. The prevalence of PN is rising with the global burden of type 2 diabetes. The causal mechanisms of PN are not fully understood, but both vascular and metabolic factors play a role. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mechanisms of Hyperexcitability in the Kindling Model of Epilepsy

    Författare :Eskil Elmer; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; Plasticity; Dentate gyrus; Mossy fibers; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Epilepsy is a syndrome characterized by recurring attacks of sudden, excessive and synchronous discharge in populations of cerebral neurons. Kindling is an animal model for complex partial epilepsy, and is particularly useful for studies on the development of the abnormal excitability underlying the generation and spread of epileptic seizures.
