  1. 1. Schwann cells and mesenchymal stem cells as promoter of peripheral nerve regeneration

    Författare :Maria Cristina Mantovani; Mikael Wiberg; Giorgio Terenghi; Susan Shawcross; Lev Novikov; Liudmila Novikova; John W Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peripheral nerve regeneration; Schwann cell; adult stem cell; myelin; senescence;

    Sammanfattning : The transplantation of primary Schwann cells (SC) has been shown to improve nerve regeneration. However, to monitor the survival of transplanted cells within the host, a stable labelling method is required. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair

    Författare :Aleksandra McGrath; Liudmila N Novikova; John Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biosynthetic conduit; Mesenchymal stem cells; Nerve graft; Nerve tissue engineering; Peripheral nerve injury; Schwann cells;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 3. 3. Biosynthetic conduits and cell transplantation for neural repair

    Författare :Jonas Pettersson; Lev Novikov; Liudmila Novikova; Mikael Wiberg; Lars Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve graft; Biosynthetic conduit; Nerve tissue engineering; Neural prosthesis; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; neurologi; Neurology; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury results in complete failure of the central neurons to regenerate and is associated with cyst formation and enlargement of the trauma zone. In contrast to the spinal cord, axons in the injured peripheral nerve have the capacity to undergo some spontaneous regeneration. LÄS MER

  4. 4. An exploration of the mechanisms behind peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Rebecca Wiberg; Liudmila Novikova; Paul Kingham; Ash Mosahebi; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peripheral nerve injury; target organ; spinal motoneurons; primary sensory neurons; degeneration; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Despite surgical innovation, the sensory and motor outcome after peripheral nerve injury is incomplete. In this thesis, the biological pathways potentially responsible for the poor functional recoveries were investigated in both the distal nerve stump/target organ, spinal motoneurons and dorsal root ganglia (DRG).
