  1. 1. Leptin endocrinology and energy homeostasis in salmonids

    Författare :Marcus Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Leptin; Leptin binding-protein; Energy homeostasis; Oncorhynchus mykiss; Salvelinus alpinus; Adiposity; Food intake; Fasting; Refeeding; Catabolism; Anorexia;

    Sammanfattning : In salmonids, the physiological role of leptin is not completely elucidated. Nonetheless, the anorexigenic effect of leptin indicates a role in their energy homeostasis. This thesis focuses on advancing the understanding of the involvement of the leptin system in the regulation of energy homeo-stasis and food intake in teleost fish. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Leptin and the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolism, and Adipose Tissue

    Författare :Camilla Vavruch; Fredrik Nyström; Carl Johan Östgren; Johan Ärnlöv; Kristina Boström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Leptin; Type 2 diabetes mellitus; Adipose tissue; Cardiovascular disease; Metabolism; Cardiovascular risk factors;

    Sammanfattning : According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and it is the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk factors for CVD are divided into two major classes: non-modifiable (age, gender, family history) and modifiable (including tobacco use, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, dyslipidemia, and stress). 3. 3. Ambulatory blood pressure and components of the metabolic syndrome in the population : With reference to the renin-angiotensin system, IgF-I, IGFBP-1, neuropentide Y, and leptin

    Författare :Fredrik Nyström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The term "the metabolic syndrome" has been given to the constellation of insulin resistance, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. In western countries it is strongly associated with obesity and atherosclerosis. The cause of the metabolic syndrome is, however, incompletely understood. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Alcohol and the effect on some appetite-regulating hormones in man

    Författare :Jan Calissendorff; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Leptin; ghrelin; octanoylated; PYY3-36; GLP-1; obestatin; alcohol; NPY; IGF-1; IGFBP-1; insulin; glucose; testosterone; cortisol; catecholamines;

    Sammanfattning : Beverage containing alcohol has been used for centuries to stimulate appetite. Ingestion of a moderate amount of alcohol increase energy intake. Regulation of food intake is complex. Several factors cooperate such as neural impulses from sensory organs; sight, smell, gut distension, social setting, memory, current energy status and hormones. 5. 5. Heart failure : role of metabolic biomarkers, ejection fraction, and sex

    Författare :Ulrika Ljung Faxén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Heart failure (HF) is common and associated with impaired quality of life (QoL) and poor prognosis. There is a ternary classification of HF based on ejection fraction (EF): HF with preserved(HFpEF), mid-range EF(HFmrEF), and reduced EF(HFrEF). LÄS MER
