16. Insights into left atrial response to pressure and volume overload
Sammanfattning : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish the ability of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA) response to pressure and volume overload respectively in aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting LA and right ventricular (RV) fibrosis in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) undergoing heart transplantation (HTx).I demonstrated that assessment of left ventricular (LV) long axis systolic velocity and amplitude of excursion is more sensitive than simple determination of ejection fraction (EF) for revealing the beneficial impact of MR surgery on overall LV systolic performance. 17. Gender Aspects on Heart Failure
Sammanfattning : There is an increasing amount of data suggesting that there are inherent epidemiological and pathophysiological, as well as psychosocial differences between men and women with heart failure (HF). These differences may be so profound that they warrant differences in management and treatment. LÄS MER
18. Echocardiographic assessment of ventricular size and function in heart transplant patients
Sammanfattning : AbstractThe overall aims of this thesis were to use echocardiography to non-invasively, delineate early structural andfunctional changes following orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT), and to define reference values in the contextof gender and bridging with mechanical circulatory support.Several factors might affect myocardial function in OHT patients rendering the use of normal values fortransthoracic echocardiography derived from healthy subjects unsatisfactory. 19. Angiotensin II Receptors in the Human Coronary Circulation and in Heart Failure
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that is implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension, heart failure and atherosclerosis. In this thesis, the efficacy and safety of Ang II receptor blockers (ARB) were evaluated. LÄS MER
20. Diastolic heart function in hypertension-induced left ventricular hypertrophy
Sammanfattning : Hypertensive left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy is an independent strong risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. An abnormal diastolic relaxation in the absence of systolic impairment is often seen in patients with hypertension, whether LV hypertrophy is present or not. LÄS MER
