  1. 1. Fatty Acid Self-Assembly at the Air–Water Interface : Curvature, Patterning, and Biomimetics: A Study by Neutron Reflectometry and Atomic Force Microscopy

    Författare :Erik Bergendal; Mark W. Rutland; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; self-assembly; branched fatty acids; Langmuir films; Langmuir–Blodgett; nanopatterning; AFM; neutron reflectometry; grenade fettsyror; Langmuir monoskikt; Langmuir–Blodgett; självassociering; nanostrukturerade material; AFM; neutronspridning; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : For more than a hundred years of interfacial science, long chain fatty acids have been the primary system for the study of floating monolayers at the air–water interface due to their amphiphilic nature and system simplicity: an insoluble hydrocarbon chain and a soluble carboxyl group at a flat air–water interface. Despite―or perhaps rather due to―the assumed simplicity of such systems and the maturity of the research field, the seemingly fundamentally rooted notion of a two-dimensional water surface has yet to be challenged. 2. 2. Phospholipid membranes in biosensor applications : Stability, activity and kinetics of reconstituted proteins and glycolipids in supported membranes

    Författare :Inga Gustafson; Gertrud Puu; Sven Lindskog; Peter Konradsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Phospholipid films; Liposomes; Membrane proteins; Glycolipids; Ellipsometry; Langmuir Blodgett LB ; Surface plasmon resonance SPR ; Resonant mirror RM ; Atomic force microscopy AFM ; Biosensors; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : In this study the formation of supported membranes onto planar solid supports has been investigated. The stability and activity of reconstituted membrane receptors has been studied. The potential use of such preparations in biosensor applications is discussed.The lipid films were made by the Langmuir Blodgett and by the liposome fusion techniques. LÄS MER

  3. 3. On the interactions in cellulose systems : surface forces and adsorption

    Författare :Monika Österberg; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :cellulose; hemicellulose; xylan; lignin; surface forces; adsorption; polyelectrolyte; SFA; AFM; ESCA; Langmuir-Blodgett films; chitosan; steric forces; bridging; adhesion;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the interactions in cellulose systems havebeen studied with emphasis on surface forces and adsorptionphenomenon. The study was limited to surfaces and polymers ofinterest for papermaking. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Lipid bilayers versus monolayers- Sponge phases and skin lipid domains

    Författare :Katarina Ekelund; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fatty acids; Langmuir-Blodgett films; AFM; domains; stratum corneum; bilayer curvature; lipids; glycerol monooleate; phase behaviour; sponge phase; L3 phase; Livsmedelsteknik; cholesterol; Food and drink technology;

    Sammanfattning : The L3, or sponge, phase is a thermodynamically stable isotropic liquid consisting of a surfactant membrane in aqueous solution. A solvent induced L3 phase is shown in systems of solvent, monoolein and water. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Nanoscale studies of the atmospheric corrosion of copper protected by ultrathin organic films

    Sammanfattning : Copper (Cu) has been utilised by humans for millenniums and has become an indispensable metal in modern industry and in our infrastructure. However, corrosion, as a natural process for metallic materials, takes place on copper surfaces in most environments. LÄS MER
