11. Studies of the Pancreas: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Aetiology
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease of severe insulin deficiency through loss of β cells in the endocrine pancreas. The T1D dogma maintains that a precipitating event unleashes autoimmunity in at-risk individuals, often measured through autoantibodies against β cell antigens. LÄS MER
12. Harm and harm reduction in smokeless tobacco users. An in vitro and clinical study
Sammanfattning : Background: This thesis describes the effects of smokeless tobacco (ST) and its derivatives on the oral mucosa; the development of, and results of applying a cessation program for snuff users with long and extensive exposure; and the persistent clinical and histomorphological changes after cessation. Methods: Three of the studies were open prospective non-randomized clinical intervention trials using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) of either 4 mg nicotine chewing gum or 2 mg nicotine lozenges. 13. Pulsatile insulin release from single islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Insulin release from single islets of Langerhans is pulsatile. The secretory activities of the islets in the pancreas are coordinated resulting in plasma insulin oscillations. Nutrients amplitude-regulate the insulin pulses without influencing their frequency. LÄS MER
14. Antigen presenting cells in autoimmune diabetes: phenotype, function and modulation by Linomide
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to better understand the role of antigen presenting cells (APC) in the development of diabetes in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse. We have shown that DC and Mphi that infiltrate the islets of Langerhans produce tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), a cytokine known to contribute to the pathogenesis in the early stages of diabetes development. 15. Langerhans cells in oral mucosa and skin. A functional and morphological study
Sammanfattning : Langerhans cells (LC) are a subpopulation of dendritic cells residing in skin and mucosal epi-thelium. LC capture antigens in the periphery and following migration to regional lymph nodes present peptides to T cells. LCs have a central role in initiating a T cell mediated immune re-sponse, both in health and disease. LÄS MER
