1. Essays on the economic impacts of floods and landslides
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of an introduction and four self-contained papers addressing aspects that are important for how the negative societal effects of natural disasters can be handled, using floods and landslides in the Gothenburg region in Sweden as examples. In paper I the valuation of the benefits of reducing the negative effects of floods, namely, property damage, traffic disturbances and water supply security, were analysed, using a choice experiment. 2. Landslide Archaeology : Past hazards and disasters in the Göta River Valley and beyond
Sammanfattning : Exploring the impact of landslides on past human communities, their landscapes, and their material remains, this thesis focuses on the most landslide-prone region of Sweden: the Göta River Valley (Sw. Göta älvdalen). LÄS MER
3. Landslides in the central Kenyan highlands : Risks and actors
Sammanfattning : Measures taken to prevent and mitigate landslides are often based on geotechnical solutions. However, to understand local effects of landslides, people’s perception, knowledge and experiences are important, as this influence the level of vulnerability, and the efficacy of adaptive and mitigating measures. 4. Progressive landslides in long natural slopes : potential extension and configuration of finished slides in strain-softening soils
Sammanfattning : A finite difference method is presented for progressive slides in long natural slopes. The method is based on a strain softening material model. A detailed worked out example is given as well as examples using a spread sheet PC program and a PC program for Windows. LÄS MER
5. Progressive landslides in long natural slopes : Formation, potential extension and configuration of finished slides in strain-softening soils
Sammanfattning : After the large landslide in Tuve (Gothenburg, 1977), the author began developing a finite difference model for slope stability analysis taking the deformation-softening of soft sensitive clays into consideration. In the model, the mean down-slope deformation in each element caused by normal forces is maintained compatible with the deformation generated by shear stresses. LÄS MER
