    Sammanfattning : There has been much discussion about the beneficial uses of lamellar graphite iron in piston rings–cylinder liner systems, where a good combinations of both thermal and tribological properties are essential. The excellent tribological performance of lamellar iron under such sliding conditions is principally associated with lubrication behaviour of the graphite particles which are distributed as lamellas throughout the matrix.     Sammanfattning : The continued development, of cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for heavy truck engines that are made of lamellar graphite iron (LGI) is focused on achieving high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) whilst conforming to environmental regulations. The purpose of this work is to further improve the tensile strength as well as the predictive engineering tools for optimization of LGI aimed to enhance the efforts for producing lighter and sustainable components without sacrificing performance.     Sammanfattning : Automotive industry products portfolio includes a wide variety of complex‐shaped cast iron products, such as truck engine components, that need to withstand a constant trend of higher demands, especially urged by stricter environmental regulations on emissions. Combined with this continued demand on properties improvement, cast iron industry faces a process problem related to the lack of understanding of solidification and mechanisms behind defect formation.
