   Sammanfattning : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have elevated levels of interferon (IFN)-α in blood and IFN-α-producing cells in tissues. In the present thesis, we investigate the mechanisms behind the upregulated IFN-α-production in SLE and also show that the IFN-α system is activated in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), with IFN-α-producing cells in the major affected organ, the salivary glands. NLE is associated with several clinical manifestations including skin rash, cytopenia and congenital heart block (CHB).    Sammanfattning : Autoantibodies to the Ro/SSA and La/SSB antigens are present in sera from patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).    Sammanfattning : Placental transfer of maternal Ro/SSA and La/SSB autoantibodies during pregnancy is associated with conduction disturbances and inflammation in the developing fetal heart, termed autoimmune-mediated congenital heart block (CHB). Maternal Ro/SSA and La/SSB autoantibodies are the main risk factors associated with the fetal cardiac manifestations to date, however, the low recurrence rate despite persisting autoantibodies in subsequent pregnancies indicates that additional factors determine fetal susceptibility.
