1. Genetic analysis of murine malaria
Sammanfattning : Malaria, an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, is one of the major world-scale health problems. Despite the efforts aimed at finding an effective way to control the disease, the success has been thwarted by the emergence of parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides. 2. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation
Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER
3. Studies of risk loci in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, is one of the most common causes of neurological disability among young adults. While the etiology is unknown, an increasing number of environmental and genetic risk factors is being identified. LÄS MER
4. The genetics of systemic lupus erythematosus : Mapping of susceptibility loci for human SLE
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease affecting organs such as skin, jointsand kidneys. Characteristic for the disease is increased production of autoantibodies, in particular against dsDNA. Previous studies of SLE in mouse models and in humans indicate polygenic inheritance and genetic heterogeneity. LÄS MER
5. Genetic Loci Contributing to Spontaneous Autoimmune Diabetes
Sammanfattning : Background and Aims: Spontaneous type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the BioBreeding (BB) rat mimics human T1D as the rats experience weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, ketoacidosis, onset during puberty and insulin-dependency within a day after diagnosis. Because the DP rat develops T1D spontaneously, it is a prime laboratory animal for dissecting the genetics of T1D susceptibility without the need for external manipulation. LÄS MER
