21. Adaptation to ischemia with special emphasis on nitric oxide
Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) may play an essential role for maintenance of cardiac function and perfusion. Endothelial dysfunction of atherosclerotic vessels may aggravate cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury. LÄS MER
22. The interplay between lipoproteins, immunity and tryptophan metabolism in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Atherosclerosis is initiated by the infiltration and accumulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the vascular wall, which activates the innate and adaptive arm of immunity, thereby causing chronic vascular inflammation. 23. Gene networks and modules in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we are using global gene expression profiles to unravel functional gene networks and modules. The focus is atherosclerosis, a disease with manifestations in the artery wall where deposits of lipids accumulate and trigger immune responses causing the development of plaques, which upon rupture can lead to a myocardial infarction or stroke. 24. Gene regulation of acute insulin response in human adipose tissue in obesity and after weight-loss
Sammanfattning : The incidence and prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions worldwide and insulin resistance, the pathophysiological link between the two conditions is consequently the focus of intense research. Although it is well-established that insulin resistance is associated with obesity, up to 1/3 of the obese subjects display insulin sensitivities comparable with non-obese individuals. LÄS MER
25. Macro- and microvascular complications of diabetes: Studies on NFAT (Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells) as a novel target for the treatment of atherosclerosis and vascular dysfunction in diabetes
Sammanfattning : Diabetes is associated with devastating chronic complications including coronary heart disease and stroke (macrovascular complications) as well as microvascular disorders leading to damage of the small vessels and the development of retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The underlying pathogenesis is not clear, but hyperglycemia has been identified as an important risk factor. LÄS MER
