11. LDL oxidation, iron, lysosomes, and macrophages in early atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) may result in its uptake by macrophages with ensuing foam cell formation. Thus, oxidised LDL (oxLDL) may play an important role in atherogenesis. Extensive in vitro evidence is in favour of the notion that LDL oxidation by cells present in atherosclerotic plaques requires the presence of transition metals. LÄS MER
12. Development of a Passive Immunization Strategy Against Atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by the accumulation of lipids and fibrous tissue in the wall of medium and large-sized arteries. The characteristic culprit of the disease is the atheroma, or atherosclerotic plaque, a patchy thickening of the arterial wall which affects the lumen, inducing various degrees of stenosis. LÄS MER
13. Mutation Analysis and Hypercholesterolemia: Studies in FH patients and in healthy middle-aged men with high, low, or increasing cholesterol levels during a six-year follow-up (the CRISS study)
Sammanfattning : Our aims were to characterize familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in a Swedish FH population and to further elucidate the clinical expression and treatment response in relation to genotype. Secondly, we wanted to identify gene variants, which may have impact on cholesterol levels in apparently healthy subjects. LÄS MER
14. Studies on effects of antioxidants on arterial thrombosis and endothelial cell injury : With special reference to Tocopherols and ApoA1 Milano
Sammanfattning : Coronary arterial endothelial injury and thrombosis are believed to be critical factors in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Experimental studies have provided evidence for au inverse relation between acute coronary events and antioxidant intake. LÄS MER
15. The effect of hypoxia on macrophage proteoglycans: potential role in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : A critical step in the development of atherosclerotic lesions appears to be the retention of low density lipoproteins (LDL) in the arterial wall, mediated by negatively charged proteoglycans (PG). Retained LDL is susceptible to modification and uptake by resident macrophages that are found in hypoxic sites in atherosclerotic lesions (with oxygen levels below 1%). LÄS MER
