1. Antioxidative Properties of Herring (Clupea harengus) Press Juice in Food, In Vitro and In Vivo Model Systems
Sammanfattning : Some species like herring (Clupea harengus) are currently under-utilized due to their small size, dark colour and susceptibility to lipid oxidation. Our hypothesis has been that the high susceptibility of herring to oxidation makes it well equipped with natural antioxidants, both fat and water soluble ones. LÄS MER
2. Mechanisms and treatment options of chronic graft dysfunction : Experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : Chronic graft dysfunction (CGD) is an important post-transplant complication. CGD can be considered as an impaired repair process, which ultimately leads to the loss of graft function. To study non-immunological factors contributing to the development of CGD in kidney grafts we used in vitro and in vivo models, and clinical studies. 3. LDL oxidation, iron, lysosomes, and macrophages in early atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) may result in its uptake by macrophages with ensuing foam cell formation. Thus, oxidised LDL (oxLDL) may play an important role in atherogenesis. Extensive in vitro evidence is in favour of the notion that LDL oxidation by cells present in atherosclerotic plaques requires the presence of transition metals. LÄS MER
4. Studies on the atherogenicity of apoB-containing lipoproteins in type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS), two conditions that are rapidly increasing in prevalence, as well as the dyslipoproteinemia and subclinical inflammation characteristic for these conditions, are associated with an increased risk for developing and dying of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this thesis was to investigate possible atherogenic properties of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in T2D and MetS. LÄS MER
5. The Role of Chlamydia pneumoniae-induced Platelet Activation in Cardiovascular Disease : In vitro and In vivo studies
Sammanfattning : The common risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as obesity, high cholesterol levels, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes and high alcohol intake, only explain approximately 50% of cardiovascular disease events. It is thereby important to identify new mechanisms that can stimulate the process of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
