1. The Force of Blood : Epidemiological studies of blood pressure in stroke, atrial fibrillation and primary care
Sammanfattning : Aim: The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate the prevalence, temporal trends and associations to cardiovascular outcomes of blood pressure levels in patients in Västra Götaland. Methods and findings: In Study I, Cox regression analysis was used to investigate associations between blood pressure and mortality in 799 patients with acute ischemic stroke who were identified in the quality register of a stroke ward at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. 2. Retention of atherogenic lipoproteins in atherogenesis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of death in the industrialized world. The diseaseis characterized by lipid accumulation and inflammation in the arterial wall, which may leadto obstruction of the blood flow. LÄS MER
3. Mechanisms and treatment options of chronic graft dysfunction : Experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : Chronic graft dysfunction (CGD) is an important post-transplant complication. CGD can be considered as an impaired repair process, which ultimately leads to the loss of graft function. To study non-immunological factors contributing to the development of CGD in kidney grafts we used in vitro and in vivo models, and clinical studies. 4. Biomolecules at Interfaces -Studied by Surface and Solution Techniques
Sammanfattning : The interfacial behaviour of biomolecules in general and proteins in particular is interesting from a biochemical point of view since proteins are involved in processes such as complement activation, blood coagulation and atherosclerotic plaque formation, but also in the context of biomedical applications such as solid-phase diagnostics, therapeutic aphaeresis and biosensors. The objective of this thesis is to study biomolecular interactions using surface sensitive biosensor techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, SPR, in combination with bulk techniques. LÄS MER
5. Interaction between dietary factors and genetic risk for lipoprotein traits and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : In previous studies, a high quality diet has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to a low diet quality, and specific “healthy” diet components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of CVD. However, results from epidemiological studies have been conflicting. LÄS MER
