6. Mitochondrial permeability transition following calcium overload. - Its role in neuronal cell death and potential as a pharmacological target
Sammanfattning : There is currently no clinically available drug with neuroprotective properties to limit the evolving cell death following e.g. stroke or traumatic brain injury. The mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) is a potential pathological mechanism causing cell death in the CNS. LÄS MER
7. Engineering alternative scaffold proteins for conditional targeting
Sammanfattning : Engineering naturally occurring proteins enables us to customize affinity domains according to our specific needs, tailoring them to become an important tool in a wide array of applications limited merely by our creativity. One of nature’s ways to regulate protein activity is by creating a functional change through alteration of a protein’s tertiary structure upon interaction with metal ions. LÄS MER
8. The N-terminal EGF Module of Coagulation factor IX. Studies of Calcium Binding and Module Interactions
Sammanfattning : Coagulation factor IX (FIX) is a vitamin K-dependent serine protease zymogen that circulates in plasma. Defects in FIX cause the bleeding disorder hemophilia B. FIX contains a Gla module, two Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) -like modules and a serine protease region. LÄS MER
9. The plant respiratory chain: Redox responses and catalytic definition of alternative pathways
Sammanfattning : The respiratory chain of plants contains both proton-pumping enzymes that conserve energy and non-proton-pumping alternative enzymes that bypass the sites of energy conservation. In addition to the proton-pumping complex I, plant mitochondria contain alternative type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, which allow oxidation of NADH and NADPH from the matrix and the cytosol. LÄS MER
10. Reactivity of human omental blood vessels. Effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine, substance P and the intravenous anaesthetic propofol
Sammanfattning : Regulation of blood flow involves several endogenous substances and mechanisms, and exogenous substances may also affect the blood flow. In the present thesis, human omental blood vessels were investigated in vitro concerning (i) characteristics of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors; (ii) mediators of substance P (SP)-induced relaxation; (iii) direct and indirect (via effects on sympathetic neurotransmission) effects of the intravenous anaesthetic propofol.
