1. Property fragmentation : Redistribution of land and housing during the Romanian democratisation process
Sammanfattning : In the context of democratisation in the early 1990s, the governments in Central and East Europe (CEE) had to decide how to deal with property that had been confiscated under state socialism. Nationalised housing and collectivised land were to a varying extent returned to former owners and their heirs by means of restitution, as well as being distributed to other citizens who were in possession of the users’ rights to such properties. 2. Evolutionary dynamics of migration and breeding in wild birds: genetic architecture, sexual conflicts and evolutionary constraints
Sammanfattning : Our knowledge of the evolutionary potential of traits involved in different selective episodes, especially in natural populations, is still limited. This is true for questions such as the genetic basis and inheritance of traits, how natural and sexual selection acts on them, and how selective conflicts influence the evolutionary response to selection. 3. Prediction of Wing Section Lift and Drag from Numerical Solutions of the Navier-Stokes Equations
Sammanfattning : A Navier-Stokes finite difference method is developed and applied to two-dimensional, incompressible, viscous flow around wing sections at medium to high Reynolds numbers. An important feature of such flows is laminar boundary layers with spatially amplified Tollmien-Schlichting waves initiating transition to turbulence. LÄS MER
4. DNA Binding of Metal Complexes. A Spectroscopic Study of Trigonal Ru(II)phenanthroline Complexes and Uranyl(VI) Ion with Respect to Specific Interactions with DNA
Sammanfattning : The interaction of metal complexes with nucleic acids has attracted attention owing to their potentials as optical probes, probes of chirality, and for use as artificial restriction enzymes. To understand the underlying mechanisms in these contexts we studied the binding to DNA of the enantiomers of two chiral ruthenium(II) metal complexes ([Ru(phen)3]2+ and [Ru(phen)2]2+DPPZ) phen=1,10-phenanthroline, DPPZ=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, and of the linear uranium(VI) complex, uranyl ([UO2]2+), using linear dichroism, circular dichroism and luminescence, as well as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. 5. Quantitative Genetics and Genome Structure in a Wild Population: the Use of a Great Reed Warbler Pedigree
Sammanfattning : Long-term studies of birds play an important role in the understanding of quantitative traits in natural populations. The relative ease by which individual birds can be monitored and caught in the wild enable us collect detailed information from individuals throughout their life time, sometimes from several generations in a population.
