    Sammanfattning : This dissertation studies early seventeenth century local government, both the secular and religious, in order to investigate that period’s concepts of ”the good society”, and the strategies that were used to achieve and retain this ideal.     Sammanfattning : This dissertation has investigated the social vulnerability of unmarried mothers in three rural court districts in the province of Ångermanland in northern Sweden during the period 1860–1940. The main focus is on the consequences that the birth of one or more illegitimate children had on the women’s lives as regards to how they were treated in the local community, including by both neighbours and formal institutions. Through a qualitative and interpretive method, which has its methodological home in the hermeneutic tradition, and with theoretical inspiration from Simone de Beauvoir’s work The Second Sex the aim of the thesis is to conceptualize Girl Scouting as girls’ and women’s history.
