    Sammanfattning : Leukemia inhibitor factor (LIF) is a polyfunctional cytokine that belongs to the IL-6 family which mainly signals through the Jak/Stat pathway via the gp130/LIFR-α heterodimer. The generation of new neurons and glial cells in the adult hippocampus is under strict regulation.     Sammanfattning : A selective destruction of pancreatic β-cells as a consequence of inflammation in the islets of Langerhans is a feature of type 1 diabetes. Pro-inflammatory cytokines secreted by T lymphocytes and macrophages infiltrating the pancreatic islets participate in the development of this autoimmune disease by acting directly on the β-cell.
