1. Leukemia inhibitor factor (LIF) and gp130 in early defence against HIV-1 infection
Sammanfattning : Leukemia inhibitor factor (LIF) is a polyfunctional cytokine that belongs to the IL-6 family which mainly signals through the Jak/Stat pathway via the gp130/LIFR-α heterodimer. The focus of my research has been to investigate and understand if and how LIF exerts HIV1 suppressing activity. LÄS MER
2. To catch a killer : on the mechanisms of interferon alpha induced apoptosis
Sammanfattning : A major clinical problem regarding treatment of malignant tumours is primary or secondary resistance to therapy. Anti-tumour drugs act primarily by induction of apoptosis. However, the knowledge of how various substances induce apoptosis is still incomplete, and so is the reason for the great variation in cellular sensitivity to these drugs. LÄS MER
3. New neurons and astrocytes in the adult brain. Studies on adult rat neural progenitors in vivo and in vitro with special reference to the effects of IGF-I and CNTF regarding proliferation and lineage determination
Sammanfattning : The hippocampal dentate gyrus in several species, including man, continues to produce new neurons and glial cells in adulthood. The generation of new neurons and glial cells in the adult hippocampus is under strict regulation. Two major events of significance for cell genesis from progenitor cells are proliferation and lineage determination. LÄS MER
4. Human endometrial receptivity and embryo-endometrium interactions
Sammanfattning : Infertility is an increasing medical and social problem affecting more than 10% of couples worldwide. Many underlying causes of human infertility have been overcome by assisted reproductive techniques; nevertheless, the implantation process remains one of the rate-limiting step as regards the success of the treatment. 5. Cytokine-induced beta-cell apoptosis and its regulation by SOCS-1 and imidazoline compounds
Sammanfattning : A selective destruction of pancreatic β-cells as a consequence of inflammation in the islets of Langerhans is a feature of type 1 diabetes. Pro-inflammatory cytokines secreted by T lymphocytes and macrophages infiltrating the pancreatic islets participate in the development of this autoimmune disease by acting directly on the β-cell.
