16. Regional differences in the response of neural stem cells and their microenvironment to ionizing radiation
Sammanfattning : Radiation therapy is one of the most effective tools for treating malignant tumors; however, cranial irradiation often results in intellectual impairment and cognitive deficits, such as impaired learning and memory. Ionizing radiation generates DNA damage, causing proliferative cells to undergo apoptosis. LÄS MER
17. Oxidized nucleotides as a predictor of radiation sensitivity
Sammanfattning : The direct and indirect effects of IR can lead to DNA damage and activation of DNA repair. The indirect effects of ionizing radiation mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) which produced through radiolysis of water and if not taken care of by the antioxidant system, can also give rise to oxidative stress. 18. Micro/nanometric Scale Study of Energy Deposition and its Impact on the Biological Response for Ionizing Radiation : Brachytherapy radionuclides, proton and carbon ion beams
Sammanfattning : Research in radiotherapy for cancer treatment focuses on finding methods that can improve the compromise between tumour cell inactivation versus damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. As new radiation modalities such as proton therapy become accessible for everyday clinical practice, a better understanding of the variation in biological response of the tumour and healthy tissues would improve treatment planning to achieve optimal outcome. 19. Novel radiation targets in the endothelium and heart muscle
Sammanfattning : Worldwide, people are being exposed to natural and man-made sources of radiation. Epidemiological studies have shown an increased risk of vascular diseases in populations that have been exposed to ionizing radiation. Vascular endothelium is implicated as one of the targets for radiation leading to the development of cardiovascular diseases. LÄS MER
20. Induction of apoptosis in relation to chromatin structure and inhibition of replication by DNA damage from ionizing radiation
Sammanfattning : The theme of this thesis has been chromatin organization ranging from methodological studies to involvement in apoptotic response. The aims have been: (i) to compare the information obtained by the AVTD method and comet assay concerning DNA-loop organization, (ii) to test the hypothesis that DNA-loop relaxation could be the triggering signal for induction of apoptosis in G0-lymphocytes, and (iii) to study the dose response for inhibition of the replication fork movement and pathways for the DNA repair process at the replication fork.
