1. Sources of Arachidonic Acid in Platelets, Bone, Marrow and Gastrointestinal Tract
Sammanfattning : This study investigates pathways by which the eicosanoid precursor pools in the platelets, bone marrow and the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa are acquired and regulated, and in this context some aspects on the interaction between triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins and platelets. 1. 2. Fat metabolism : A clinical and experimental study with special reference to newborns
Sammanfattning : Lipid emulsion is an important constituent of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In the investigations described in this thesis the effects of different lipid emulsions in neonates were studied. LÄS MER
3. Nitric Oxide Synthase in Pancreatic Islets During Trauma and Parenteral Feeding
Sammanfattning : The influence of trauma (acute pancreatitis) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on pancreatic islet hormone secretion in relation to islet expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was investigated. Acute pancreatitis resulted in an impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) which was found to be parallelled by a marked expression of iNOS and an exaggerated NO production in the pancreatic islets. 4. Non-caloric regulation of food intake
Sammanfattning : Food intake is shaped by environmental, endocrine, metabolic, and reward-related signals. A change in appetite is an outcome of integration of the relevant external and internal stimuli. While the main purpose of eating is to reverse a negative energy balance, mechanisms protecting homeostasis change appetite for other reasons. LÄS MER
5. Impact of sepsis and HIV-1 infection on neutrophil radical production, lipids and lipoproteins
Sammanfattning : In clinical sepsis a decrease in total serum cholesterol caused by reduced HDL and LDL cholesterol occurred early in the course of the infection with a normalisation after 2 months. This "sepsis HDL" was shown to contain the acute phase reactant SAA and it affected several functions of the neutrophil. LÄS MER
