  1. 1. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique

    Författare :Morteza Rohani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ultrasound; atherosclerosis; flow mediated dilatation; endothelial function; carotid arteries; thoracic aorta; brachial artery; coronary artery disease; nicotine; snuff; prednisolone; rheumatoid arthritis;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Cardiovascular regulation and vascular structure in prehypertension and coronary heart disease

    Författare :Anna Myredal; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :prehypertension; coronary heart disease; repolarization; baroreflex; intima thickness; CABG; non-dippers;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to characterize vascular structure and different aspects of cardiovascular regulation in otherwise healthy subjects with slightly elevated blood pressure and compare to healthy subjects with normotension and also investigate patients with established primary or secondary hypertension and coronary heart disease. Altered cardiac repolarization and arterial baroreflex function has been associated with adverse prognosis and increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias in patients with cardiovascular diseases. 3. 3. Cardiovascular Disease and Immune Mechanisms in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Författare :Dag Leonard; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnel Nordmark; Maija-Leena Eloranta; Søren Jacobsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; Cardiovascular Disease; Intima-Media Thickness; STAT4; IRF8; Interferon-α; Plasmacytoid dendritic cell; GM-CSF; IL-3; Medicin; Medicine; Genetics; Genetik; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune, inflammatory disease characterized by autoantibody production and an activated type I interferon system. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is as a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to identify genetic risk factors for CVD in SLE. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Atherosclerosis and Insulin Resistance AIR A cross-sectional study of 58-year old men

    Författare :Lena Bokemark; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL particle size; atherosclerosis.;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that insulin resistance is associated with atherosclerotic disease in the carotid and femoral arteries as measured using the ultrasound technique in clinically healthy 58-year old men with varying degrees of obesity and insulin resistance. The subjects were recruited from the general population and were free from clinical cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and treatment with antihypertensive, lipid-lowering and anti-diabetic drugs (n=818). 5. 5. Atherosclerosis in middle-aged men. A prospective study with focus on factors related to the metabolic syndrome

    Författare :Karin Wallenfeldt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :apolipoproteins; atherosclerosis; C-reactive protein; insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL cholesterol; longitudinal study; metabolic syndrome X; smokeless tobacco; ultrasonography;

    Sammanfattning : The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease CVD) risk factors. Pro-spective studies have demonstrated that patients with MetS are about three times more likely to experience CVD events than those without MetS. Up to one third of the adult population seems to be affected worldwide. LÄS MER
