  1. 1. Genetic subtypes in unicellular intestinal parasites with special focus on Blastocystis

    Författare :Joakim Forsell; Birgitta Evengård; Margareta Granlund; Tom van Gool; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intestinal parasites; Blastocystis; Entamoeba; Giardia; molecular detection; PCR; subtype; intestinal microbiota; Sweden; Zanzibar; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of molecular tools for detection and typing of unicellular intestinal parasites has revealed genetic diversities in species that were previously considered as distinct entities. Of great importance is the genetic distinction found between the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar, two morphologically indistinguishable species. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a non-invasive, protozoan parasite causing the diarrheal disease giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including humans. The parasite has two main life cycle stages; disease-causing trophozoites and infectious cysts. Trophozoites colonize the host’s upper small intestine by attaching to intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). G. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Comparative Genomics in Diplomonads : Lifestyle Variations Revealed at Genetic Level

    Författare :Feifei Xu; Jan O. Andersson; Staffan G. Svärd; Matt Berriman; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : As sequencing technologies advance genome studies are becoming a basic tool for studying an organism, and with more genomes available comparative genomics is maturing into a powerful tool for biological research. This thesis demonstrates the strength of a comparative genomics approach on a group of understudied eukaryotes, the diplomonads. LÄS MER
