21. Neuroprotection in the Injured Spinal Cord : Novel Strategies using Immunomodulation, Stem cell Transplantation and Hyaluronic acid Hydrogel carriers
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to establish strategies to minimize secondary damage to the injured spinal cord. Secondary damage that follows spinal cord injury (SCI) involves inflammatory and excitotoxic pathways. LÄS MER
22. Testicular interleukin-1 alpha: Isolation, purification and and identification of a constitutively produced and secreted cytokine by the intact adult rat testis

23. The prognostic significance of uPA, uPAR an d the cytokine IL-1-alpha in urinary bladder cancer
Sammanfattning : Tumor invasion and metastasis are the major causes of cancer-related death. Proteases are important for the invasive and metastatic propensities of tumors. We have studied the mechanism underlying endogenous expression of the serine protease urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) by human breast cancer cells. LÄS MER
24. Studies of cytokine mediated regulation of central nervous functions : role of prostaglandins
Sammanfattning : The communication between the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS) results in an array of centrally regulated illness responses, including fever and increased hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. The mechanisms by which the immune system signals the brain across the blood-brain barrier have not been completely elucidated, but proinflammatory cytokines, like interleukin-1 (IL-1), are believed to act as important mediators. 25. Temporomandibular joint pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia in relation to interleukin-1ß and serotonin
Sammanfattning : This thesis had two main aims and comprises a methodological and a clinical part. The aims were to develop a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) synovial fluid (SF) sampling method that enables the determination of the true SF level of various substances and, by using the developed TMJ SF sampling method, investigate the hypothesis that circulating as well as SF content of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and serotonin (5-HT) influence different TMJ pain entities and signs of tissue destruction in patients with TMJ inflammatory disorders.
