  1. 6. Distribution and pathophysiological role of amyloid precursor protein and presenilin 1 : characterization in rats and in vitro studies on the pathogenic arctic mutation

    Författare :Camilla Nilsberth; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia that presents a growing dilemma worldwide. Alzheimer's disease is neuropathologically characterized by cerebral atrophy accompanied by deposition of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Effects of Th-1 and Th-2 Cytokines and Reactive Oxygen Species on Normal Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells

    Författare :Caroline Kampf; Benjamin Gaston; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; ytokines; desmosomes; focal adhesions; free radicals; hypochlorous acid; nitric oxide; normal human bronchial epithelial cells; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Epithelial damage and shedding of the epithelium are common observations in many airway diseases such as asthma, Sjögren’s syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. The ability of the cells to attach to each other and/or to the matrix seems to be altered. LÄS MER

  3. 8. T cells in atherogenesis

    Författare :Anna-Karin L Robertson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :atherosclerosis; T cells; transforming growth factor-beta; CD4; low-density lipoproteins; Th1 Th2; hypercholesterolemia;

    Sammanfattning : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Alzheimer's Disease: The role of alpha1-antichymotrypsin-amyloid peptide (Abeta 1-42) interaction in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease

    Författare :Yongxin Sun; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; lipid metabolism.; inflammation; á1-antichymotrypsin; Alzheimer’s disease; amyloid-â peptide;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer?s disease (AD) is an age-related, irreversible brain disorder that occurs gradually and results in memory loss, behavioural and personality changes. The disease is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta (Ab) peptide in the extracellular space and the protein Tau within nerve cells of certain regions of the brain. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Effects of imidazoline compounds on intracellular CA2+ and apoptosis

    Författare :Ioulia Appelskog; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :imidazolines; imidazoline site; sulfonylurea; glucose; interleukin-1beta; insulin secretion; glucagon; somatostatin; pancreatic islets; pancreatic P-cells; HIT-T15 cells; apoptosis; cytoplasmic free Ca2 concentration;

    Sammanfattning : Cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of insulin release from the pancreatic beta-cell. [Ca2+]i is also important in the control of apoptosis. LÄS MER
