1. Ions interacting with macromolecules : NMR studies in solution
Sammanfattning : Specific ion effects, identified for more than hundred years, play an important role in a wide range of phenomena and applications. Several mechanisms such as direct ion interaction with molecules have been suggested to explain these effects, but quantitative experimental evidence remains scarce. LÄS MER
2. Evolution of Techno-Economic Systems - An Investigation of the History of Mobile Communications
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of how techno-economic systems emerge and evolve and how such processes can be analyzed. To these ends, the history of mobile communications is investigated, seen as a complex techno-economic system with two rapidly evolving and interacting subsystems - mobile telephony and mobile data communications - which are described, dissected and compared in case studies. 3. Limit theorems for generalizations of GUE random matrices
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of two papers devoted to the asymptotics of random matrix ensembles and measure valued stochastic processes which can be considered as generalizations of the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) of Hermitian matrices H=A+A†, where the entries of A are independent identically distributed (iid) centered complex Gaussian random variables. In the first paper, a system of interacting diffusing particles on the real line is studied; special cases include the eigenvalue dynamics of matrix-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes (Dyson's Brownian motion). 4. Multiscale models and simulations for diffusion and interaction in heterogeneous domains
Sammanfattning : We investigate multiscale and multiphysics models for evolution systems in heterogeneous domains, with a focus on multiscale diffusions. Although diffusion is often studied in terms of continuum observables, it is a consequence of the motion of individual particles. LÄS MER
5. Statistical inference on interacting particle systems with applications to cancer biology
Sammanfattning : Interacting particle is a mathematical framework which allows for condensed and elegant modelling of complex phenomena undergoing both deterministic and random dynamics. While there are several ways to formulate an interacting particle system, this thesis focuses on modelling such dynamics using stochastic differential equations. LÄS MER
