1. Early growth, retinopathy of prematurity and insulin-like growth factors in preterm infants
Sammanfattning : Aims:Paper I: To perform measurements of the lower leg length (LLL) in preterm infants, compare and evaluate handling error and precision of two instruments, and estimate the time required to show growth.Paper II-IV: To investigate whether low postnatal levels of serum IGF-I are associated with abnormal retinal vessel development. 2. Regulation of intracellular signaling events that modulate insulin action
Sammanfattning : Insulin regulates several mechanisms of fundamental importance to the body involving glucose, fat andprotein metabolism. Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, liver and adipose tissue promotes an increaseddemand for insulin secretion. LÄS MER
3. Growth factors in spermatogenesis
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to increase the knowledge of die effects of locally produced growth factors and hormones on germ cell proliferation in rat testis in vitro. Since impaired sperm production and function accounts for half the cases of infertility, it is important to understand the physiological actions in germ cell development. LÄS MER
4. Liver regeneration : With reference to malnutrition and growth factors
Sammanfattning : The liver has a unique capacity to regenerate after damage, irrespective of cause. The regulatory mechanisms of this regeneration are not fully known. Liver regeneration· is associated with rapid growth and thereby increased demands for energy and synthesis of new compounds. LÄS MER
5. Identification of novel growth hormone-regulated factors
Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis aimed to identify novel factors involved in the regulation of longitudinal growth and bone mineralization in response to growth hormone (GH) treatment. This was done by performing a single factor study (Paper I) where it was found that growth response was negatively correlated with adiponectin levels during the first year of GH treatment in short prepubertal children.
