  1. 1. Insulin Resistance : Causes, biomarkers and consequences

    Författare :Christoph Nowak; Tove Fall; Erik Ingelsson; Johan Sundström; Rachel Freathy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; insulin resistance; diabetes; insulin secretion; cardiovascular; mendelian randomization; proteomics; metabolomics; genomics; molecular epidemiology; complex disease; risk prediction; coronary heart disease; stroke; hyperglycemia;

    Sammanfattning : The worldwide increasing number of persons affected by largely preventable diseases like diabetes demands better prevention and treatment. Insulin is required for effective utilisation of circulating nutrients. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Insulin Polymorphism Crystallographic Characterization of Insulin Microcrystals

    Författare :Mathias Norrman; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Strukturkemi; Structure chemistry; biomatematik; protein crystallography; X-ray powder diffraction; Bioinformatics; medical informatics; microcrystals; Bioinformatik; Molekylär biofysik; Molecular biophysics; biomathematics biometrics; medicinsk informatik; insulin;

    Sammanfattning : Insulin is a protein needed for the uptake of glucose from the circulating blood. In absence of sufficiently high insulin levels in the body or when the cells have a reduced sensitivity for insulin a disease state referred to as diabetes occurs. Treatment of diabetes generally requires daily injections of exogenous insulin. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Evolutionary Analysis of the Insulin-Relaxin Gene Family from the Perspective of Gene and Genome Duplication Events

    Författare :Robert Piotr Olinski; Finn Hallböök; Mike Thorndyke; Pierre Pontarotti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Neurosciences; insulin; relaxin; insulin-like protein; gene duplication; paralogous region; Ciona intestinalis; conserved synteny; ortholog; Drosophila melanogaster; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Paralogs arise by duplications and belong to families. Ten paralogs (insulin; IGF-1 and -2; INSL3-6 and 3-relaxins) constitute the human insulin-relaxin family. The aim of this study was to outline the duplications that gave rise to the vertebrate insulin-relaxin genes and the chromosomal regions in which they reside. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Insulin-Degrading Enzyme : A link between insulin resistance and Alzheimer's disease

    Författare :Helena Kullenberg; Marie Svedberg; Maria Kumlin; Thomas Nyström; Michael Alvarsson; Sophiahemmet Högskola; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Prior research has demonstrated an elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) among individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Insulin resistance is a potential common link between these conditions, and it is associated with AD due to the insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), which also degrades amyloid-β (Aβ) in the brain. 5. 5. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Författare :Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70.
