  2. 2. Insect immunity : Inducible antibacterial proteins from Hyalophora cecropia

    Författare :Dan Hultmark; Hans Boman; Sten Hammarström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : A powerful bactericidal activity can be induced in the hemolymph of many insects as a response to an injection of bacteria. The nature of the effector molecules of this immune response was investigated, using pupae of the Cecropia moth, Hyalophora cecropia. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Insect immunity : fractionation and characterization of some immune proteins induced by primary infections of giant silk moth pupae

    Författare :Torgny Rasmuson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : A potent antibacterial activity in hemolymph of giant silk moth pupae is demonstrated. The system is inducible and RNA and protein synthesis are needed for the expression of the activity. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were found to be susceptible. The activities could be selectively inhibited, indicating a multicomponent system. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Charting Insect Diversity

    Författare :Dave Karlsson; Fredrik Ronquist; Torbjørn Ekrem; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect faunas; biological inventories; citizen science; DNA barcoding; morphotype barcoding; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Despite Sweden's rich legacy in entomology, a significant portion of its insect fauna remains poorly studied. Addressing this and other biodiversity knowledge gaps, the Swedish government unveiled the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative (STI) in 2002, with the ambitious goal of documenting and scientifically describing all multicellular species in the country. 5. 5. Impacts and drivers of insect herbivory on element cycling in forests globally

    Författare :Bernice Hwang; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biogeochemical cycling; folivory; insect cadavers; insect frass; insect herbivory; litter decomposition; nutrient cycling; carbon; nitrogen; phosphorus; silicon; silica;

    Sammanfattning : The effects of insect herbivores on forest functioning are not well understood even though they can have important impacts on ecosystem processes by intercepting foliage before resorption and depositing nutrient-rich materials to the soil. In this thesis, I investigated the impact and drivers of insect folivores on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si) cycling in broadleaf forests, and how this varies with major climate variables.
