21. Interactions between Streptococcus pyogenes and the human immune defence
Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen frequently colonizing the throat and skin of humans. To facilitate colonization and spread and to avoid the host immune defence, streptococci are endowed with a variety of virulence factors, two of which are investigated in this thesis namely streptolysin O (SLO) and M protein. 22. LYME BORRELIOSIS Detection and identification of the infecting genotype
Sammanfattning : Lyme borreliosis is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, a bacterium with a parasitic life-style, which is transmitted between hosts by the Ixodes tick-vector. Humans will incidentally become infected. The resulting illness can involve the skin, nervous system, joints and heart. LÄS MER
23. Recurrent Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis Studies on etiology and treatment
Sammanfattning : In acute pharyngotonsillitis group A streptococci (GAS) is the etiological agent in 30-50% of cases. Phenoxymethylpenicillin (pcV) is the drug of choice in Sweden. However, the failure rate is as high as 5-25% and further pcV treatment is followed by still higher failure rates. The background of failures remains largely elusive. LÄS MER
24. Streptococcal M protein and human C4BP
Sammanfattning : Antigenic variation of surface proteins allows microorganisms to evade the immune system of the infected host. This phenomenon represents an apparent paradox, because the variable protein must retain an important function, while its antigenic properties vary extensively. LÄS MER
25. Characterisation of the Microbial Community in Indoor Environments: a Chemical-Analytical Approach
Sammanfattning : Inhalation of airborne microorganisms and their toxic components and products may induce a wide spectrum of acute and chronic airway manifestations. The study describes important capabilities of chemical marker analysis in defining human exposure to microorganisms in indoor environments. LÄS MER
