  1. 1. Microalgae : future bioresource of the sea?

    Författare :Martin Olofsson; Catherine Legrand; Jukka Seppälä; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Microalgae; algal cultivation; bioresource; bioenergy; CO2 mitigation; multi-species community approach; seasonal variation; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; Environmental technology; Miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Unicellular microalgae are a renewable bioresource that can meet the challenge forfood and energy in a growing world population. Using sunlight, CO2, nutrients,and water, algal cells produce biomass in the form of sugars, proteins and oils, allof which carry commercial value as food, feed and bioenergy. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Influence of electrode material and stochastic factors on the performance and microbial community assembly in microbial electrochemical systems

    Författare :Marie Abadikhah; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microbial community assembly; bioanode; biocathode; biochemical system;

    Sammanfattning : Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are systems with microbial communities in the form of biofilms on electrode surfaces. The electrogenic bacteria in the anode biofilm act as catalysts for the oxidization of organic compounds, leading to release of electrons, generation of electrical current, and production of hydrogen and methane at the cathode. 3. 3. Systems Modeling Approaches to Physical Resource Management : An Industrial Ecology Perspective

    Författare :Rajib Sinha; Björn Frostell; Maria Malmström; Miguel Brandao; Mujibur Rahman; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Complex systems modeling; environmental accounting and monitoring; en- vironmental footprint; industrial ecology; pressure-based driver-oriented approach; Modellering av komplexa system; miljöräkenskaper och miljöövervakning; miljöpåverkan; industriell ekologi; flödesbaserad övervakningaktörsorienterad strategi; Industrial Ecology; Industriell ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Many of the present problems that we are facing arise as unanticipated side-effects of our own actions. Moreover, the solutions implemented to solve important problems often create new problems. To avoid unintended consequences, understanding complex systems is essential in devising policy instruments and in improving environmental management. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Evaluating Swedish seaweeds for biorefinery

    Författare :Joakim Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; proteins; carbohydrates; salinity; chemical composition; ulvan; variation; Ulva spp.; Seaweed; macroalgae; hydrothermal liquefaction;

    Sammanfattning : A sustainable future demands a transition from oil to biomass to produce fuels, chemicals, commodities, and energy. However, to generate the predicted amount of bioenergy required by 2050, all the biomass harvested today should be utilized. One type of biomass that has received relatively little attention is seaweeds. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Beyond Waste Management : Challenges to Sustainable Global Physical Resource Management

    Författare :Jagdeep Singh; Björn Frostell; Olga Kordas; Anju Singh; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sustainable global physical resource management; global waste management; systems thinking; life cycle thinking; planning framework; global environmental justice; circular economy; Industrial Ecology; Industriell ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Current physical resource management (PRM) was investigated in a global perspective in this thesis, to gain a deeper understanding of its implications in a sustainability perspective. In particular, the main challenges to the current PRM system and the kinds of systemic changes needed for sustainable PRM were examined. LÄS MER
