1. Induced hypothermia after cardiac arrest
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on studies of the clinical use of induced hypothermia as an intervention to reduce mortality and neurological impairment after cardiac arrest. After the publication of two trials indicating benefit of induced hypothermia, we developed a registry to assess outcome, possible adverse events and conduct of induced hypothermia when this intervention was implemented in a clinical population of cardiac arrest patients. 2. Development and Applications of in vitro Models to Study Human Brain Evolution and Disease
Sammanfattning : Neuroscience focusing on human development and disease has long been hampered due to ethical reasons, low tissue availability, and low translatability from animal models. To circumvent these obstacles, we have developed two methods for the investigation of human neural cells in culture. LÄS MER
3. Regulation of CNS inflammation upon T cell interaction with CNS resident cells
Sammanfattning : Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is a neurologic, autoimmune disease characterized by CNS immune cell infiltration and demyelination. To experimentally study MS, we have utilized the mouse model Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE). EAE is induced through immunization with myelin antigens, which elicits an autoreactive Th1 cell response. LÄS MER
4. A stargazer's guide to neurodegeneration : Astrocytes' role in the propagation of pathological proteins
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are characterized by brain accumulation of pathogenic protein aggregates. In the AD brain, amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau form plaques respective tangles, while in the PD brain α-synuclein (α-syn) form Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. LÄS MER
5. Neuron-to-neuron propagation of neurodegenerative proteins; relation to degradative systems
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are defined by neurodegeneration and accumulations of misfolded proteins that spread through the brain in a well characterized manner. In AD these accumulations consist mainly of β-amyloid (Aβ) and tau, while in PD, α-synuclein (α-syn) make up the characteristic lewy pathology. LÄS MER
