  1. 1. Defence on Demand : A physiological perspective on phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator traits

    Författare :Jerker Vinterstare; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phenotypic plasticity; inducible defences; stress physiology; cortisol; immune function; trade-offs; sexual dimorphism; crucian carp; visual ecology; predator-prey interactions; POMC pro-opiomelanocortin ; colour change; eco-immunology; Anti-predator defences; Inducible morphological defence; Phenotypic plasticity; Stress physiology; Cortisol; Immune function; Crucian carp; Predator-prey interactions; Trade-offs; Sexual dimorphism; POMC; Pro-opiomelanocortin; Visual ecology; Eye evolution; Melanin; Eco-immunology; Pace-of-life; Behavioural plasticity;

    Sammanfattning : Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Aspects of regular long-term endurance exercise in adolescents, with focus on cardiac size and function, hormones, and the immune system

    Författare :Louise Rundqvist; Maria Faresjö; Peter Blomstrand; Katarina Steding-Ehrenborg; Jönköping University; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adolescence; endurance-trained; cardiac dimension; cardiac systolic function; cardiac diastolic function; growth hormone; immune response; echocardiography; biomarkers; cytokines; chemokines; insulin-like growth factor 1; type 1 diabetes-related autoantigen; proinsulin;

    Sammanfattning : The long-term effects of starting high-intensity training at younger ages are largely unknown. The present studies focused on adolescents who had performed regular endurance exercise for several years at an elite level and compared those subjects with a control group of adolescents of similar age and sex who had not engaged in regular exercise. 3. 3. Mechanisms for immune escape in epithelial ovarian cancer

    Författare :Pernilla Israelsson; Ulrika Ottander; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Eva Lundin; Ivan Nagaev; Karin Sundfeldt; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human; ovarian cancer; high-grade serous cancer; EOC; HGSC; HGSOC; tumor microenvironment; immune escape; immune suppression; cytokines; exosomes; NKG2D; MICA B; ULBP1-3; DNAM-1; surgery; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Tumors develop mechanisms to subvert the immune system, constituting immune escape. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), the deadliest of all gynecological malignancies, uses a variety of mechanisms to undermine immune surveillance, aiding its establishment and metastatic spreading. 4. 4. Cellular Immune Responses to Cytomegalovirus

    Författare :Anna Karin Lidehäll; Olle Korsgren; Thomas Tötterman; Ineke ten Berge; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cytomegalovirus; cellular immunology; infection; immune responses; congenital infection; CD4 T cells; CD8 T cells; immunosuppressed; Clinical immunology; Klinisk immunologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a widespread infection affecting 50-90% of the human population. A typical silent primary infection is followed by life-long persistence in the host under control by virus-specific CD8 (“killer”) and CD4 (“helper”) T cells. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Early childhood thymectomy - impact on immune function

    Författare :Judith Gudmundsdottir; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Immunologi; Thymus; Pediatric cardiac surgery; Congenital heart defect;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: The thymus is the site of T cell maturation. Children born with a congenital heart defect often endure surgery early in life, and during surgery their thymus is routinely removed, as it blocks the surgeons access to the heart. LÄS MER
