  1. 11. Processing death: Oval brooches and Viking graves in Britain, Ireland and Iceland

    Författare :Frida Espolin Norstein; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Oval brooches; Burials; Viking Age; Funerary rituals; Memory; Performance; Death; England; Scotland; Ireland; Iceland;

    Sammanfattning : Burials with oval brooches from the Viking Age settlements in Britain, Ireland, and Iceland have frequently been interpreted as the graves of a specific and uniform group of people: (pagan) Scandinavian women of relatively high status. This interpretation is partly a result of the way in which the material has been treated, as static entities with more or less fixed meanings. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Saving the child : regional, cultural and social aspects of the infant mortality decline in Iceland, 1770-1920

    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; infant mortality; neonatal mortality; breastfeeding; infant feeding; midwives; physicians; hygiene; neonatal tetanus; measles; fertility; literacy; history of medicine; Iceland;

    Sammanfattning : The dissertation deals with the infant mortality decline in Iceland during the 19th and early 20th Century. It shows that despite its low degree of urbanization, pre-transitional Iceland displayed higher infant mortality rates than most other European countries. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Dead-Ice Under Different Climate Conditions: Processes, Landforms, Sediments and Melt Rates in Iceland and Svalbard

    Författare :Anders Schomacker; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; klimatologi; glacier; dead-ice; surge; ice-cored; Little Ice Age; fysisk geografi; Geologi; Geology; Svalbard; Iceland; Sedimentology; cartography; pedology; geomorphology; Sedimentologi; Physical geography; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; climatology;

    Sammanfattning : Modern dead-ice environments in the glacier forefields of Brúarjökull, Iceland and Holmströmbreen, Svalbard were investigated with focus on landform and sediment genesis, as well as quantification of melting. Field monitoring and studies of multi-temporal aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provided data for the melting quantification. LÄS MER

  4. 14. The awakening of Christianity in Iceland : Discovery of a timber church and graveyard at Þórarinsstaðir in Seyðisfjörður

    Författare :Steinunn Kristjánsdóttir; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : The central theme of this thesis is the Christianization of Iceland during the period from the late 10th century to the turn of the 12th century. 5. 15. Late Weichselian and early Holocene changes of vegetation, climate and sea level on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland

    Författare :Mats Rundgren; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; asthenosphere viscosity; glacial loading unloading; marine polar front migrations; sea-level change; climate change; vegetation change; Early Holocene; Late Weichselian; Iceland; Lake sediments; Skagi peninsula; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Sammanfattning : Sediment sequences from five lakes on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland, were subjected to mineral magnetic analysis, carbon analysis, pollen analysis, plant macrofossil analysis, diatom analysis, radiocarbon dating and tephra analysis in order to make detailed reconstructions of vegetation, climate and sea level during the Late Weichselian and Early Holocene. The main purpose was to investigate if the dramatic deglacial climatic shifts recorded in proxy records from the North Atlantic region, such as ice cores, marine sediments and lake sediments, also are registered in Skagi lake sediments, which would be expected considering Iceland´s position in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, within the range of the Late Weichselian–Early Holocene migrations of the marine polar front.
